Learning to Imitate at Picture This, 2010

Synopsis:

Learning to Imitate in Absentia is part two of an investigation that follows on from the first iteration Learning to Imitate.

Picture This is delighted to present a new work by Yael Davids. Learning to Imitate in Absentia is part two of an investigation that follows on from the first iteration Learning to Imitate, a performance that took place in the Picture This studio space in May 2010. Revisiting Learning to Imitate as a score for a new performance, Learning to Imitate in Absentia experiments with the emptiness that appears after a performance.

A central question to this new work is how grief manifests itself in art. Davids feels that performance, by its very nature, carries an element of loss - by it's temporality it progresses towards an end. There is an elegiac sensibility to her process, reinforced by the nature of the actual space - but also by a recent loss in the artists' own life. A notion of grief will inform this work.

Davids will be setting up residency in the studio - with objects such as boards and sheets of glass as well text. The resulting show will be open for the public for two days only - 27 and 28 May.
