Artists Moving Image Course
2nd May 2011

This short introductory course offers an exploration of the key ideas and approaches that have emerged in over a century of film and video art.

An Introduction to Artists' Moving Image.

Six weekly Thursdays starting 2 June, 6.30 - 8.30pm

£70

Artists have been exploring the potential of the moving image as a medium of artistic expression since the provocative early film experiments of the Surrealists. Six lectures examine different thematic and historical aspects in artist's moving image, focusing on significant artists and films, from early pioneers to contemporary practitioners.

Lectures will be accompanied by clips, screenings of rarely seen films and a visit to the Picture This Studio.

Artists' Moving Image: Contemporary Practices

Sat 2 JULY, 2 - 5pm

£15

Course includes screenings of recent works and discussion with a break for refreshments.

The Magical Consciousness exhibition, which explores recent artists' fascination with the cinematic, offers us a timely opportunity to explore some of the ways that current artists are working with the moving image, and provides the impetus for this short workshop seminar, exploring some of the contradictions and diversities of the current landscape in artists moving image culture. We will screen a number of recent artist works, discussing some of the themes they explore, and the contexts in which their work is made and shown. We will visit examples of moving image works currently on display in the gallery, as part of the Magical Consciousness exhibition, to discuss the ideas behind contemporary practices, and to consider what new practices and ways of thinking about film have emerged in recent times.

The course is led by curator and writer Lucy Reynolds. Lucy is a lecturer, artist and film curator. Her area of research focuses on expanded cinema and British avant-garde film of the 1970s. She teaches the history and theory of cinema and artists' moving image at Birkbeck College, the University of Westminster and Goldsmiths College.
